MEMPHIS (NNS) – Lieutenant Commander Erik Moss relieved Major John Flores as the commanding officer of the Memphis Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), June 22.
Moss is looking forward to commanding the MEPS, and feels a huge sense of pride and responsibility in the mission he’s entering, where he and his command will work hand-in-hand with recruiters to bring qualified and able people into the armed forces.
“When applicants come here to process, if you think about it, that’s the biggest day of their life,” said Moss, “So to be there, and to give the oath of enlistment, and to share some mentorship and wisdom before they ship off, I think that’s an incredible honor and a privilege.”
Flores was emotional about leaving his command and the relationships he had built there, and he was optimistic about Moss’s ability to do an excellent job of commanding the Memphis MEPS.
“Thanks to everyone, I hope I helped in some way and left a good impression on you all,” said Flores. “I know that Lieutenant Commander Moss will continue to make the Memphis MEPS great.”
This command has a long history as one of the most respected MEPS in the country, and it’s been used as an example for other commands in the U.S., as well as for a delegation from Ukraine, of how military in-processing should be done.
Lieutenant John Berosky came to the support his longtime friend who he served with on the USS Mobile Bay (CG 53). “It’s a great honor to be invited here by Lieutenant Commander Moss. He’s a great guy, and I really respect him . . . It’s just cool to see someone who you know is going to do a great job step into this kind of role.”
This command is part of a vast network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico. Originally located on Jefferson Street, and later on Beale Street in downtown Memphis, the MEPS moved to its current location in 2013.
The mission of USMEPCOM and the Memphis MEPS is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards. These standards include aptitude for military service, physical qualification, and background evaluation screening.
