YOKOSUKA, Japan – Chief Information Systems Technician Daniel Andres, an instructor at Information Warfare Training Site Yokosuka (IWTS), Japan, was awarded the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Presidential Certificate of Merit, July 10.

Andres volunteers his off-duty time working at the NMCRS Thrift Store onboard Fleet Activities Yokosuka, and was recognized for the impact his charitable work has had on his community.

“I am very grateful to receive this award,” said Andres. “It is an honor to work with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society to help support the Sailors and their families in the U.S. 7th Fleet. I am thankful for the staff of military and civilian volunteers that work evening shifts. Without their support this would not be possible.”

Jill Warning, NMCRS Yokosuka director, surprised Andres with the award in a ceremony while he was volunteering at the NMCRS Thrift Store. The NMCRS Presidential Certificate of Merit is awarded to volunteers based on merit, as determined by the President of the NMCRS Steve Abbot.

Andres developed and implemented a plan to expand the NMCRS Thrift Store’s breadth of operations by incorporating nighttime shifts. “These shifts provide additional volunteer opportunities for Sailors in the Yokosuka community, as well as provide after-hours shopping opportunity for community members,” offered Abbot.

The mission of NMCRS is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Service of the United States, eligible family members, and survivors when in need; and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs.

“Chief Andres embodies the selfless attitude that is integral to deckplate leadership in the Navy,” said Lt. Cmdr. John Connally, executive officer of Information Warfare Training Command San Diego, the parent command of IWTS Yokosuka. “This award is well deserved, and I am proud to call Chief Andres a member of my command.”

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
