It’s the warfighters that benefit from employees who simply insist on redefining processes and pushing the envelope at Tobyhanna Army Depot.
Coworkers and leaders singled out two such employees for going that extra mile. Finish Inspector Edward Pitcavage and Mechanical Engineering Technician Robert VanBrunt, were named winners of the Employee of the Quarter Award for the second quarter of fiscal 2018 in the senior ¬¬and junior categories, respectively.
Pitcavage’s federal career spans nearly 49 years – 30 on active duty in the Navy and the remainder as an Army civilian employee. He works in the Continuous Process Improvement Directorate’s Quality Control Division and his responsibilities include inspecting items from small components to large communications shelters.
“It’s rewarding to know I’m making a difference for individuals deployed to forward operating locations,” Pitcavage said, adding that he is committed to ensuring the equipment warfighters use every day works properly. “It’s the team effort and top down leadership that allows me to be successful.”
As an inspector, Pitcavage spends his days examining work performed on assets in the industrial area to make sure military standards are met.
“Ed is the type of inspector who identifies the problem and brings many different solutions to the table,” said Wes Thomas, chief of the Systems Integration and Support Directorate’s Support Operations Division. “He continually attempts to solve problems at the lowest level.”
Coworkers say Pitcavage is not afraid to make the tough calls when it comes to the quality of assets being delivered to customers.
“Ed’s dedication and work ethic, coupled with a positive attitude make him an asset to the organization,” said Jude McLaughlin, finishing inspector. “His constant drive has a positive effect on team wherever he is assigned, and that drive equates to quality assets constantly moving through the process on time and within cost.”
VanBrunt is experienced and knowledgeable in all aspects of manufacturing processes, logistics modernization program, computer aided engineering, molding and welding, according to Frank Nawrocki, chief of the Production Engineering Directorate’s Fabrication Engineering Branch and VanBrunt’s supervisor.
“Bob’s work ethic, diversified experience and strong commitment to supporting and improving Tobyhanna Army Depot sets the example for others,” Nawrocki said. “His level of commitment to the mission is demonstrated daily as he strives to help organizations to be more efficient and competitive in the future.”
The nine-year depot veteran is a certified tool and die maker who designs molds and fixtures, and provides engineering support to the Systems Integration and Support Directorate’s Welding Branch. Molds are used to produce rubber or plastic items or add features such as strain reliefs to electronic cable assemblies. The fixtures aid in fabrication processes such as welding, drilling, machining and assembly or may be used for unique items such as test equipment used to validate repairs.
“He completely redefined the process for how Production Engineering provides welding support to the Welding Branch,” said Nathan Thomas, former chief of the Production Engineering’s Design, Development and Fabrication Division. “At Bob’s suggestion, the customer helped Tobyhanna acquire equipment that eliminated non-valued added steps, and subsequently reduced costs to future programs.”
VanBrunt credits his success to coworkers and the depot’s extensive training opportunities.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in a number of courses related to my duties,” said VanBrunt. “Lately I’ve been attending workshops related to additive manufacturing methods. I also like to attend trade shows to research new equipment and manufacturing techniques.”
Recognizing employees for a job well done is directly linked to one of the Toby 2020 objectives – Invest in our People. The quarterly awards program identifies and rewards junior-and senior-level employees who, in the performance of their assigned duties, have established a pattern of excellence. Nominations may be submitted by co-workers, who worked with the nominee, directly or indirectly, with a minimum of at least four nominators or by an employee’s supervisor.
