While in command of the largest Naval Base on the west coast, Mulvehill led eight geographically separate installations under the NBC umbrella to arm, repair, provision, and service the U.S. Pacific Fleet and other operating forces in support of training and national tasking.
He ensured support services and facilities requirements for 18 aviation squadrons, two aircraft carriers, the largest Naval aviation repair facility on the West Coast, and more than 140 tenant commands.
Under Mulvehill’s leadership, NBC safely conducted more than 360,000 sorties at three airfields, while remaining a good steward of the environment through the proactive management of 29 threatened and endangered species.
Mulvehill credits the many awards and accomplishments NBC received to the hard work and dedication of the base staff including active duty, civilian and contractors.
“No one person can run a base, especially one that has eight different geographic locations across two counties and multiple cities,” said Mulvehill. “My staff are out there every day engaged in the daily running of the base and they are often out at night and on weekends dealing with the emergencies that arise.”
In 2017, NBC received recognition through the SANDAG iCommute Diamond Awards program as one of 33 organizations throughout San Diego County for outstanding efforts to encourage employees to use alternative transportation choices, such as public transit, carpooling, biking, and walking to work. The award placed Naval Base Coronado among the top organizations in the county providing a variety of commuter assistance and employer services to help reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
NBC was recently awarded the Commander, Navy Installations Command 2018 Installation Excellence Award, placing second among 71 installations worldwide for outstanding efforts in installation management and warfighting readiness.
Mulvehill, accompanied by his wife and two sons departed for Naples, Italy directly after the ceremony where he will be the Chief of Staff for Commander Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA).
