MOLOKAI, Hi. (Aug. 13, 2018)—The 181st Intelligence Wing, Indiana Air National Guard, sent more than 40 Airmen, primarily from the 181st Medical Group, to participate in health clinics at six locations in Maui County, Hawaii: Central Maui, Kihei, Lahaina, Hana, Molokai, and Lanai. The clinics are providing medical, dental, and vision services at no cost from August 11-19.
Tropic Care Maui County 2018 was set up for an Innovative Readiness Training mission. The IRT mission statement is to produce mission-ready forces through military training opportunities that provide key services for American communities. For the mission, the 181st IW is working hand-and-hand with other service members for the Air National Guard, Air Force, Army, Navy Reserve, and Marine Corps Reserve.
“The number one purpose for this IRT is training,” said U.S. Air Force Col. William Bray, Indiana Air National Guard, 181st IW, 181st MDG commander.
Col. Bray served as the Lead Provider at the Mitchell Pauole Center on Molokai.
“It is a great feeling to come and train here and also to provide care to those who want it,” said Bray.
In an IRT mission there are a lot of moving parts and to make sure those moving parts keep moving together, there needs to be someone in charge, someone that everyone reports too. That is why on Molokai U.S. Air Force Capt. Kelli Marietta, Indiana Air National Guard, 181st IW, 181st MDG, is the officer in charge (OIC).
“The duties of the OIC start at a 10,000 foot view to ensure the mission goals are accomplished,” said Marietta. “We have an amazing leadership team that includes an assistant OIC, a chief and a first Sgt. to ensure all sections, all ranks, and all services have what they need to accomplish their goals. I also ensure safety and accountability is the number one importance.”
One of the main missions of IRT is being innovative. “Being located on a remote island, our resources are limited so we have to be innovative with the resources we have and learn how to substitute other resources to accomplish the mission,” said Marietta. “Being innovative means to find new solutions to the same problem and one of my jobs as the OIC is to oversee innovative ideas and to make sure they are on track to accomplish the mission.”
U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Alyssa Phillips, a medical technician assigned to the Indiana Air National Guard, 181st IW, 181st MDG, participated in Tropic Care Maui County 2018 in Molokai, and this was her first annual training with the 181st IW.
“I never used my skills in a situation like this, but it makes me feel good that I can use the medical skills that I have learned to help others,” said Phillips. “I checked community members’ blood pressure and assisted one of the optometrist with a vision screening. I feel more confident about myself after this training.”
