CLARKSDALE, Miss. — As the story goes, blues legend Robert Johnson met the Devil at a crossroads in the north Mississippi Delta and agreed to sell his soul to Satan to become the best guitar player in the world. Whether or not the transaction took place, Johnson is generally regarded as one of the best pickers ever and died at the age of 26. The blues highway marks the alleged spot of the transaction between Johnson and the devil at the intersection of U.S. hwys 61 and 49 in Clarksdale. However, there is evidence that the actual crossroads of note are located at the southern end of Rosedale at the intersection of Mississippi hwys 1 and 8. If you ask local residents, they’ll tell you the Clarksdale location is for tourists, but the real location is in Rosedale.
