PHOENIX – Hundreds of local students were given the opportunity to participate in the U.S. Army High School Challenge, Sept. 25, Trevor Browne High School, Phoenix.
The High School Challenge is an academic, teamwork, and strategy-based event that provides students the chance to learn about scholarships and career opportunities with the U.S. Army.
This takes place through various events, including a fitness relay, obstacle course and a strength match assessment where students can discover what Army job best suits their leadership abilities.
Recruiters from Phoenix Central Recruiting Company were present overseeing the event and assisting students with questions they had about the Army.
The High School Challenge travels to schools all around the country, said Dennis Lozanne, tour manager, and is yielding positive results in Phoenix so far.
“This is our second school for the week in Phoenix and it’s been a lot of fun. Yesterday we had over 400 registrations of students showing interest in the Army,” Lozanne said. “You can see they enjoy the camaraderie and competition aspect of the challenge.”
Lozanne said the challenges provide the opportunity for students to engage in teamwork and see where their strengths lie.
“Wherever we go we see students banter back and forth with each other about how to do specific things, especially with the Strategic Stability challenge,” he said. “They actually have to think about how to solve the challenge, so we’ll see them coaching each other about how to complete it. Individualism becomes a team.”
Traveling around the country and interacting with students is the best part of his job, Lozanne said, especially when it comes to informing them about the opportunities the Army has to offer.
“We want them to understand it’s not just about picking up a gun and shooting, but actually developing a bright future for themselves from over 150 different jobs,” he continued. “The Army is a great way to pave their futures for them and that’s the message we want to get across here.”
