HULMAN FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind.- One of the main missions of the Indiana Air National Guard is to support the nation in times of natural disasters. This mission came knocking on the door of the 181st Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Group (ISRG) and their Unclassified Processing, Analysis and Dissemination (UPAD) system team during the aftermath of Hurricane Florence in North Carolina Sept. 19, 2018. This mission would not be like other missions. This time, a new way of gathering data was put into use.
“This is the first time a UPAD cell has operated a wide area motion imagery (WAMI) platform to collect data over a large area,” said U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant Andrew Johnson, 137th Intelligence Squadron (IS), mission operations commander. “This platform does away with the ‘looking through a soda straw’ effect.”
The WAMI platform that was used is called Gorgon Stare. It gives a bird’s-eye view using 12 cameras that produced a detailed video.
“This mission was used to check critical infrastructure, to see what roads were passible or not, and to see where rescuers needed to go to save lives,” said 1st Lt. Johnson.
“Indiana is leading the way on a lot of these UPAD missions,” said Tech Sgt. Miller. “The leadership thinks that it is a good mission and they send us to a lot of good training so when things like this happen then we are ready.”
