DJIBOUTI -- The German frigate FGS Lubeck provided assistance to the disabled United Arab Emirates-flagged dhow Al Zahid, found drifting in the Gulf of Aden approximately 25 miles off the coast of Yemen, Sept. 6.
The dhow Al Zahid, with a crew of nine, had suffered an engine failure and had been adrift in the Gulf of Aden for days, according to the dhow's master.
A team of technicians from Lubeck repaired the dhow's engines and provided the crew with food and water. All nine personnel were found to be in good health.
Lubeck, commanded by Cmdr. Rudiger Solf, deployed to the region in August to conduct maritime security operations (MSO) as part of Commander Task Force 150 (CTF 150). CTF 150 conducts MSO throughout the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.
MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material.
