The Nevada National Guard took three of four National Guard Bureau Excellence in Diversity Awards today at the National Guard Diversity and Inclusion workshop at the Camp Richardson Professional Education Center here.
Nevada winners included:
State, Territory and District of Columbia: Nevada National Guard
Air National Guard Unit: The 152nd Airlift Wing, Nevada Air National Guard.
Individual Army National Guard Soldier: Sgt. 1st Class Benjamin Pagni
The only award Nevada did not garner at the annual award ceremony was the Army National Guard Unit award for best unit or organization, given to the South Dakota Army National Guard.
“It gives me great pride and joy concerning the receipt of three of this year's Excellence in Diversity Awards from the National Guard Bureau,” said Brig. Gen. William Burks, the Nevada National Guard’s adjutant general. “It shows the efforts and the work that our individuals, units and the Military Department in Nevada put into making sure no one is left behind or not included by the members of the Nevada National Guard. Not only do our efforts in diversity and inclusion bring about better employee performance and innovation, but it also grows the talent pool from which we can recruit and retain the best of the best to harness their talents, skills and experiences within the Nevada National Guard. It also makes us an employer of choice for today's young talent just starting their careers.”
Mentorship events such as the Nevada Air Guard’s speed mentorship program along with the state's annual Diversity Day and Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan helped push Nevada over the top in the 2018 awards.
This marks the second time in three years that the Nevada National Guard has won the majority of the excellence in diversity awards. In 2016, the Nevada National Guard took three of four awards at the annual event: top individual Air Guardsmen, top Nevada Army Guard unit and the state tied Vermont for top award for best state.
The NGB Excellence in Diversity Awards are presented to outstanding National Guard individuals, organizations, states and territories for significant contributions to diversity and inclusion initiatives. The event is hosted annually by the Joint Diversity Executive Council.
