HARTFORD, Connecticut – The commanding officer of the Los Angeles-class, nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) and several crew members visited their namesake city, Oct. 24.

Cmdr. Matthew Fanning, Hartford’s commanding officer, and 17 crew members toured their submarine's namesake city to build community relations.

“It is important for us to visit our namesake city to highlight the service of the Sailors on Hartford as we sustain our relationship with the city for which we are named,” said Fanning. “Walking around the downtown area reminds us who and what we are fighting to defend.”

During the visit, Hartford’s crew arrived at City Hall and met with Mayor Luke Bronin to discuss current and future community relations with the city of Hartford. The crew also met with leadership from local sports teams including Hartford Wolf Pack and Hartford Athletics during time spent at City Hall.

After leaving City Hall the crew participated in a community relationship event at Rawson STEAM school.

“The school greeted us with open arms; they had so many questions in regard to how Hartford operates, our lifestyle and the certain things they can do to be in our shoes,” said Chief Machinist’s Mate (Auxiliary) Samuel Diaz. “The kids were so receptive to answer and really understand our country’s Navy.”

Rawson’s principal, Dr. Tayarisha Stone, welcomed Hartford Sailors to the school and spent time escorting Sailors to meet students in various classrooms.

“Today was an exciting day at Rawson Steam School to have Sailors from USS Hartford come visit,” said Stone. “Our focus on STEM-related careers makes this potential partnership a great opportunity for collaboration. We look forward to working with the Sailors in the spring.”

After a successful event at the school, the crew transited to the State Capitol building were they had the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with Governor Dannel Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman.

Before leaving the State Capitol, Governor Malloy presented the crew of Hartford a letter of appreciation for their recent award of the Battenberg Cup, an award presented annually to the best all-around ship or submarine in the Atlantic Fleet.

“Congratulations to every member of the crew. I can only imagine how hard you worked up to that point,” said Malloy, expressing his pride and appreciation on behalf of the people of Connecticut while presenting the letter.

The crew of Hartford said it felt great to tour their namesake city and that they were honored to build community relations, thanking all that took part in the event.

“The USS Hartford has worked tirelessly to honor the City’s name; it was a fantastic trip my Sailors won’t forget,” said Fanning.
