POWIDZ, Poland -- The 191st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, partnered with the USO host the 191st first Virtual 5K run in Powidz, Poland, on Oct. 28.
A Virtual 5K is a run designed for participants to complete on their own time and at their desired location. This means participants are able
to complete the 5K at any given time, whether they choose to run alone or as a group.
This run was held in honor of the Day of the Dead, which commemorates the Mexican holiday and celebrates of the lives of the deceased.
“This was a successful event, and we plan to do more runs for charity,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Jay Winn, 191st CSSB command sergeant major. “We were able to raise almost $700 for charity.”
Proceeds from the Virtual 5K run will go to the non-profit organization Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls was established in 2006 with a vision to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world.
Soles4Souls has distributed over 30 million pairs of shoes in 127 countries and all 50 U.S. states since its establishment.
Many of the 40 participants signed up to improve their physical fitness, however, some ran because it provided a worthwhile opportunity to help those in need.
Back home I work in a school with a similar charity that provides shoes for children and I just wanted to support a good cause, 1st Lt. Deidra Henry, a Puerto Rican National Guardsman said.
