SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 8, 2018) – The Defense Institute for Medical Operations (DIMO) was selected as a recipient of the 2018 International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Ambassador Award, Nov. 8.

Each year, ITLS acknowledges medical directors, coordinators, instructors and units based on nominations from its chapters and training centers.

DIMO’s mission is to support global health initiatives and build strong, resilient, international partnerships through world-class, hands-on medical and disaster preparedness training courses.

Over the past year, DIMO conducted seven ITLS training missions, training and certifying 221 students and 24 instructors in five countries, including Rwanda, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Vietnam and Ukraine.

“DIMO team efforts to provide sustainable, point-of-injury training in collaboration with partner nations has been quite successful and the International Trauma Life Support organization is recognizing DIMO with this annual award,” a message from the ITLS executive director read.

ITLS has a total of 113 chapters and centers; 75 international and 38 throughout the United States. DIMO was selected for its diligence and impact, which includes helping to establish an ITLS chapter in Rwanda.

“ITLS is an amazing partner,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Ballard, DIMO’s Medical Director and Chief of Curriculum. ”We are working with them to build, write and update material, with applicability to civilians as well as military.”

Ballard received the award on behalf of DIMO during the ITLS Trauma Conference, Nov. 8.

“There remains much work to do, as this is only the beginning,” said Ballard. “Thank you for your continued support as we work to improve trauma care, worldwide.”
