LOS ANGELES (NNS) – The mission of a Navy recruiter is to man the Navy the Nation needs with qualified, skilled and motivated young men and women. Each recruiter brings their individual experiences and skillsets to the team.

Operations Specialist 2nd Class Dominick Padovano, a Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Los Angeles recruiter, works closely with community members to build relationships and lead America’s best candidates into the U.S Navy.

When he isn’t at his recruiting station, Padovano devotes his off-duty hours to volunteering at his local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Padovano divides his volunteer hours as a swim instructor, peewee basketball and hockey coach and as a camp counselor during the summer months.

“Volunteering is important to me because I can make a positive impact on the community,” said Padovano. “Being able to provide a positive role model both in and out of my office means a lot to me. Recruiting gives me the opportunity to help others obtain their personal goals in life, and volunteering lets me do the same thing in a different way.”

Padovano was born in San Bernardino, California, and attended Cajon High School where he played baseball, basketball, soccer and water polo. His talent as an all-star ball player and years of swimming experience earned him many awards in high school.

After graduating from high school in 2011, he decided to take part in his family’s tradition and serve in the military by enlisting in the Navy. Padovano expresses that this life changing decision helped him develop new skills and a better work ethic, as well as satisfying his need to be part of a team.

“What makes the Navy an outstanding branch is our diversity in duty stations and Sailors all around the world,” said Padovano. “The Navy has given me the opportunity to become a leader, further my education, and give me the tools needed to be successful in life.”

Padovano’s first duty station was the amphibious dock transport ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) in Norfolk. Working in the operations department, he quickly advanced through the ranks becoming a petty officer second class. During this time, he participated in a deployment to the Persian Gulf.

Padovano said the Navy reinforced his drive, loyalty, and teamwork mentality. In 2016, he saw an opportunity to help his Navy outside of the operations community and decided to become a Navy recruiter.

“I enjoy potentially taking a young adult off the streets and having a positive impact on their lives,” said Padovano. “I feel I’m shaping the future of the Navy by consistently recruiting member of our team. The same team I want to play for, for years to come.”

Padovano’s leadership says he is on track for another promotion, and he is performing top-notch work while investing time in his community’s youth. With all his accomplishments, he continues to have his eyes set on higher goals and plans to continue to be a team player.

“Padovano is basically NRD Los Angeles’ MVP [most valuable player] this year and I expect he will keep hitting home runs, so-to-speak, while he is recruiting here,” said Navy Counselor 1st Class Patricia Arteagatirado.

The Navy’s recruiting force totals over 6,100 personnel in more than 1,200 recruiting stations around the globe. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.

NRC consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,200 recruiting stations across the country.
