VICENZA, Italy (November 21, 2018) — Dropping temperatures remind us that it’s the time of the year to get packages and cards mailed in time for the holidays.
For those stationed overseas, the clock is ticking! If you want your items to arrive on time, make your way to the nearest postal service center (PSC) as soon as possible.
According to David Kosmicki, postmaster and official mail manager at the PSC on Caserma Ederle, Nov. 27 is the first deadline.
“People should be thinking about mailing holiday items now because of the time it takes for mail to arrive,” said Kosmicki. This includes mail leaving Italy and heading to the United States, and for those stateside who will be mailing to Soldiers, civilians and their family members here.
Suggested dates recommended by the U.S. Postal Service for sending parcels, letters and cards are as follows:
Nov. 27: SAM/Retail Ground Parcels
Dec. 11: Priority Parcels
Dec. 11: First Class Letters and Cards
One way to make the trip to the post office a little smoother, said Kosmicki, is to sign up and use Click and Ship on USPS.com. On the site, he said, customers pay for postage online and print a shipping label, and then come to the post office to mail it. Those not using this service but need to mail a parcel must be sure that all customs forms and addresses on the parcel are completed BEFORE bringing it up to the postal finance window.
Customers must be aware that some items are not allowed to be mailed, per U.S. postal regulations and international laws. Items include perfumery, coffee, alcoholic beverages, prepared meats, tobacco, sea salt and lithium batteries, to name a few. If you have any questions about whether or not the contents of your shipment can be shipped by USPS, consult the lists of prohibited and restricted items on their website.
Violating the rules can cause problems, said the postmaster.
“Anyone who mails items on the prohibited item list could be subject to UCMJ or civilian misconduct actions,” he said. “In addition, violators could have mail privileges suspended or revoked.”
Holiday hours at the U.S. Army Garrison Italy postal service centers are as follows:
Caserma Ederle
• In addition to normal weekday hours, the PSC will be open Saturdays in December — Dec. 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please note that on Saturday, Dec. 22, the post office will only be open for package pickup.
• Regular hours and package pickup are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• Official Mail and Registered Mail, Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to noon, and 2-5 p.m.
Caserma Del Din
• Dec. 11, 13, 18 and 20, from 2 to 5:30 p.m., only for package pickup.
• They will be also open Dec. 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., package pickup only.
• Regular hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Camp Darby
• Dec. 12, 14, 19 and 21, normal hours will be extended from 1:30 until 4:30 p.m., package pickup only. They will also open Dec. 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., package pickup only.
• Regular hours are 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
