TUCSON, Ariz. – Leadership from the Phoenix Recruiting Battalion attended the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual 40 Under 40 awards ceremony, Dec. 4, Pima Air and Space Museum, Tucson, Ariz.
The purpose of the awards is to recognize 40 individuals under the age of 40 in Arizona who are making significant achievements and contributions to their profession and the community.
Delivering the keynote speech was Lt. Col. Scott Morley, commander, Phoenix Rec. Bn., who spoke to attendees about the concepts of selflessness, community and collaboration, all traits shared by everyone attending the ceremony.
“The power of collaboration is something which is uniquely embedded, in all facets of work and life, and especially in the community,” Morley said. “Without collaboration, there would be no tangible sense of achievement or success – we need each other to get the job done.”
During his 18 years in the U.S. Army, Morley said the power of selflessness, community and collaboration has been a constant theme.
“I think these three aspects are cornerstones of military service. As a young officer, you have to figure out quickly how to build a community of trust and collaboration,” he said. “The fact is, in or out of uniform, we all rely on collaboration with various people and groups to ensure our job is performed successfully. Working with multiple organizations and agencies is not without its challenges, but when applied correctly, can be an invigorating and powerful experience for all concerned.”
As the commander of the Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, Morley said he feels his job is now similar.
“I work every day with local community leaders, in areas such as education, local government and with organizations like the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. In both jobs, establishing relationships and generating collaborative efforts in the communities our battalion serves in Arizona and New Mexico are key,” Morley said. “In my job, we seek to attract the finest young Americans possible to serve the country; without reaching out to groups with whom we have not previously collaborated, we are not reaching our potential.”’
This ties into a program utilized by the Army that truly exemplifies both community and collaboration, he continued.
“The Partnership for Youth Success Program, commonly known as PaYS, is a program that truly aligns both the Army and employer with the best assets on the job market- the Soldier,” Morley added. “This alignment could be in any one of the diverse fields for which today’s 40 honorees have been recognized, ranging from banking and real estate, to restaurant owners and healthcare professionals.”
“PaYS is a strategic partnership between the US Army and a cross section of corporations, companies, and public sector agencies. This unique Program is part of the Army’s effort to partner with America’s business community and reconnect America with its Army,” Morley explained.
From my point of view, the PaYS program is a win-win-win situation. Each year 250,000 service members exit the military and re-enter civilian life. Through those Soldiers, our local community has an opportunity to tap into some of the hardest working leaders, team builders and problem solvers in the world, Morley said.
“For the youth, they win because we train them, educate them and teach them the power of community and collaboration. They return not just with management skills, training and education, but as leaders,” he said. “For the community, it wins by investing its top youth talent into the U.S. Army, and those veterans return with life skills, a world view, and a keen sense of civic duty. For local business owners, for the cost only of a signature on an agreement and the promise of a single interview, those businesses get first crack at harvesting those hard-working leaders, team builders and problem solvers.”
“I think what all of us in this room want to do is help generate productive members of society who have values and experience and put them back into the community. Through the power of collaboration we can do just that. Those honored today are the best at what they do, community leaders with whom anyone would want to collaborate,” Morley said.
Morley praised the 40 honorees as the types of role models and leaders today’s youth can look to and hopefully learn from.
“Through each of you in this room and today’s honorees, we can educate and teach future leaders the power and worth of hard work, and how to become the finest they can be in their established field of work,” Morley said. “You provide selfless inspiration as role models and leaders to whom today’s youth can look up and emulate. Those are areas on which the United States Army also prides itself.”
