GRANITEVILLE, S.C. - The South Carolina National Guard conducted a deployment and guidon casing ceremony Dec. 21, 2018, in Graniteville, South Carolina, to recognize the 1221st Engineer Clearance Company’s mobilization in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
More than 140 Soldiers with the 1221st Engineer Clearance Company, South Carolina National Guard, will deploy for nine months to the Middle East providing route clearance support. The ceremony was for the South Carolina National Guard to officially recognize the unit’s mobilization with their friends and families in attendance prior to the holidays, but the Soldiers will not depart South Carolina till early 2019 for pre-mobilization training at Fort Bliss, Texas before deploying overseas.
"Today is not an easy day, but it's a day we can be proud of the men and women standing here, " said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. R. Van McCarty, deputy adjutant general-Army, South Carolina National Guard.
The unit has a tremendous history, previously deploying to Afghanistan for a route clearance mission and the current Soldiers have put in the training that will prepare them for their mission ahead, he added.
While deployed, the unit, designated as the Renegades, will be commanded by U.S. Army Capt. Russell Brewton.
"Renegades have been there to answer every call, whether deployment to Afghanistan or responding to a natural disaster in the state," said Brewton. "We'll continue to maintain that Renegade spirit.
The 1221st Engineer Clearance Company recently conducted route clearance training on the Talon IV Reset robotic vehicle in preparation for the deployment, as well as responded to Hurricane Florence.
"I know the [non-commissioned officers] and Soldiers of the 1221st will uphold what it means to be a Renegade," said Brewton.
