HULMAN FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. - Many members of the 181st Civil Engineering Squadron, 181st Intelligence Wing deployed to a base in Niger in 2018.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. David Lasagna, 181st CES commander, was deployed to the location and while deployed he was the Base Civil Engineer and a ranking senior military member.

“We are the lead U.S. entity and consequently the "host unit" responsible for the overall Base Operating Support - Integration (BOS-I),” said Lasagna. “We are responsible for anything and everything that goes with running a small city.”

A lot of time and work goes in to running a small city.

“Our team is responsible for water, sewer, electricity grid, food, lodging, public health, custodial services, medical response, entertainment, laundry, chapel/religious services, fitness center/gym, shipping/receiving, supply, accounting, contracting, customs, budgeting, intelligence, force protection/security, communications (secure/unsecure network, satellites, radios, alarms, phones), legal services, vehicle maintenance, fuels, explosive ordnance disposal, personnel/human resources, and an airport with aircraft and aircraft maintenance,” said Lasagna.

While in a deployed environment the work can be stressful, so events and activities are held to boost morale.

“We set up a movie tent, ping pong, corn hole and hosted different dining experiences,” said Lasagna. “We had 4th of July events, Labor Day, Air Force birthday, and memorial runs.”

The 181st CES is crucial to the 181st IW mission readiness and the readiness of partnering nations.

“It's an awesome and humbling experience,” expressed Lasagna. “You should know that your servicemen and women do some amazing things in some pretty austere conditions. They do it with pride, humility, humor, and a wonderfully contagious spirit. It's an honor to serve with them, and it's an honor to serve you all and our great United States.”
