NAVAL AMPHIBIOUS BASE CORONADO (Jan. 25, 2019) -- Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP) and Commander, Naval Surface Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet (CNSL) conducted the second coordinated Surface Type Commander Staff Talks, Jan. 23-24, at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.

CNSP/CNSL Staff Talks are an effort to align processes and policies between Pacific and Atlantic staffs to continue driving the Surface Force toward a culture of excellence and enable transitioning readiness into lethality in an era of a renewed Great Power Competition.

During the initial round of Staff Talks in June 2018, CNSP/CNSL reviewed 437 processes, identified 77 differences, and approved 60 process changes to better standardize and align efforts.

The second Staff Talks focused on the progress of the recent changes to training processes and additional processes to align CNSP and CNSL staffs to drive commonality, where appropriate.

"It was clear during the Surface Navy Association (SNA) this month that Navy leadership is focused on and aligned behind efforts toward driving to a culture of excellence, transitioning readiness to lethality and reinvigorating mission command (https://www.public.navy.mil/surfor/Documents/CNSF_Remarks_to_SNA-2019.pdf). We need to keep that in mind as we improve our processes to help the fleet own the fight," said Vice Adm. Rich Brown, Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

"These talks are extremely important to ensuring we continue to provide ready ships, ready Sailors and ready civilians who are prepared to fight and win operations as we return to great power competition - One Fight, One Navy," said Rear Adm. Jesse A. Wilson Jr., Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic. He thanked attendees for their hard work and dedication and emphasized, "As we continue to enhance our already strong partnership, we must always monitor assumptions, trends, and alerts, then prepare to adjust fire accordingly."

The next Staff Talks are set for summer 2019 to continue making the process reviewing policies and procedures to make improvements that drive toward a culture of excellence and meet the needs outlined in the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Strategy, and the Navy Strategy, which call for sea control whenever and wherever needed.

"As I said at SNA, we still remain unmatched in sea control, but we have to work at it harder now, and we must continue to get better. We must learn rapidly. We must innovate faster. We must be tougher than our adversaries," said Brown. "Staff Talks are one piece in a larger effort to support our Surface Warfare Ethos." (https://www.public.navy.mil/surfor/Pages/mission.aspx)
