COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina National Guard conducted the Best Warrior Competition awards ceremony at McCrady Training Center in Eastover, South Carolina, Jan. 30, 2019 to recognize the Best Warrior Non-Commissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year.

The 2019 Soldier of the Year is Spc. Chase Jones, Detachment 1, Delta Company, 1-111th Aviation Battalion, 59th Aviation Troop Command avionic mechanic. The 2019 Best Warrior Non-Commissioned Officer is Sgt. James McCants, Alpha Company, 1-118th Infantry Battalion, 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade fire team leader. The Best Warrior Competition is an annual five-day event designed to test Soldiers’ mental and physical stamina.

This announcement comes after Soldiers from each major command in the South Carolina National Guard competed in the annual five-day Best Warrior Competition, Jan. 26-30, 2019. The competition is conducted at the McCrady Training Center and Fort Jackson, and consisted of a variety of mental and physical tests, aimed at pushing Soldiers to their limits. Among these were an Army Physical Fitness Test, boards, written exam and essay, ruck march, warrior tasks and battle drills, military operations on urban terrain training, components of the Army combat readiness test, swim test, weapons qualification, obstacle course, land navigation, and combat run.

"You understood your strengths and weaknesses and had to work on your weaknesses and that’s what makes you professionals," said U.S. Army Col. Z. Krompecher, First Army, senior Army advisor for South Carolina and guest speaker for the ceremony.

Jones and McCants will advance to represent the South Carolina National Guard in the Region III Best Warrior competition. Region III is made up of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, the Virgin Islands and Kentucky.

"Take this back to your commands and tell them what it takes to be the best warrior," said Command Sgt. Maj. Russ Vickery, South Carolina National Guard state command sergeant major.
