INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 3, 2019) -- Airmen assigned to the 181st Intelligence Wing, Indiana Air National Guard, along with Soldiers assigned to various Indiana Army National Guard units, supported the Indianapolis Public Schools Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Drill Meet February 2 at the Arsenal Technical High School R.D. Behlmer Gymnasium in Indianapolis.

The Airmen and Soldiers served as judges for five separate graded events during the competition.

The troops were excited by the opportunity to support the JROTC cadets during the drill meet.

“I’m all about giving back to the community,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Joe O. Henning, the superintendent of the 181st Base Honor Guard.

The IPS JROTC Drill Meet, which is held annually, provides a varsity-level competition for JROTC cadets in the art of exhibition and precision drill and ceremonies. The meet showcases the JROTC leadership goals of teamwork, esprit de corps, motivation and personal excellence in a competitive environment. Indiana National Guardsmen with the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit, which renders military honors at various ceremonial events throughout Indiana, serve as judges for the competition.

The 2019 iteration of the meet included five separate events, all of which were graded by service members from the Indiana National Guard. The events included armed exhibition, unarmed exhibition, squad drill with rifle, color guard and inspection. The culminating event, knockout drill without arms, involved individual cadets listening for and reacting to a series of complex drill commands and movements.

Service members with the Indiana National Guard recognized the significance of the competition to the cadets.

When they put on the uniform, they take pride in what they are doing, said U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Richard C. Joyce, a senior non-commissioned officer with the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit. They take pride in the uniform. After all, the uniform means a lot to everyone who wears it.

Additionally, JROTC staff members recognized the cadets’ efforts during the competition.

“Everyone did a great job,” said retired U.S. Army Capt. Fermin Hernandez, the JROTC senior Army instructor who oversees the JROTC program at Arsenal Technical High School. “Regardless of the outcome, they all were winners today.”

At the conclusion of the competition, during which Crispus Attucks High School took first place overall, Joyce shared words of wisdom with the cadets.

“Taking care of your uniform and paying attention to detail speaks to your character,” said Joyce. “It means you pay attention. It will help you in life. Any time you go to a job, whether that’s in the civilian world or in the Army, people will notice your attention to detail.”

Regardless of the future paths chosen by the cadets, they will be able to look back to their performance during the IPS JROTC Drill Meet and take pride in the time and effort they spent alongside their fellow cadets.
