    1st Marine Logistics Group

The Marine Logistics Group has seven new construction projects in the 12 and 14 areas, kicking off with a groundbreaking ceremony, March 25, at the site of the new MLG Command Center.

"This whole area is going to be transformed," stated Maj. Neil G. Anderson, 51, San Diego, 1st MLG maintenance officer.

Now, when people enter the 14 area, they will know they are in MLG territory.

The location of the new Command Center is key to establishing 1st MLG's presence in the area. The two-story building will stand on the corner of 16th street and Vandegrift, across from the fire station, and give a much needed visual presence to the logistics leaders of the west coast.

Other projects in store for the MLG include new buildings for Combat Logistics Regiment 1 and 7th Engineer Support Battalion's headquarters elements. Both buildings will have state-of-the-art classrooms and match the new architectural look of the MLG campus.

Additional projects in the area include a new two-story building that will house both the Military Police Company and the special staff elements of the 1st MLG.

To up the capabilities and improve the existing structure of the Explosives Ordinance Disposal unit, a new building is in the works that will include a vehicle repair facility.

The Combat Skills Training Facility and a new armory will also be constructed next to their current locations.

Taking on the responsibility of the more than $100 million project is Soltek Pacific and R. A. Burch, who already have the ball and the bulldozers rolling.

"They're actually ahead of schedule and they're doing [great work]," said Mike Gough, 52, Oden, Ind., construction manager for resident officer-in-charge of Construction, Camp Pendleton, Naval Facilities Engineering Command.

Visitors to the area have already noticed the work being done on the armory and have seen the demolition of the old office structure that housed the special staff.

Now that the area is clear, they are at the "cut and fill" stage where they level out the ground to start laying the foundation.

Completing all seven projects is expected to take about two years. In the end the visual presence of 1st MLG will be readily apparent to anyone passing through the 14 Area.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will take place at 10:45 a.m., March 2, on the corner of E Street and 16th Street, across from the 14 Area Post Exchange.
