FORT POLK, La. — Imagine having breakfast with Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and 2, and Sam I Am one Saturday morning. These colorful characters jumped off the pages of Dr. Seuss books to entertain Fort Polk children and their families for National Nutrition Month and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast hosted by Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital March 23.
Promoting healthy nutrition and celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday was the main object of this special breakfast.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” said Alexis Motley, BJACH dietician.
The sold-out crowd dined in a transformed world of Seuss complete with characters anxious to pose for photos with children and families.
Each child received a Cat in the Hat top hat, a gift bag filled with goodies and feasted on green eggs, ham, Horton pancakes, Lorax toast, choice of syrups and whipped cream, juice, milk or coffee, all served on red plates.
BJACH’s dining facility staff transformed the atmosphere with artistic artwork depicting Dr. Seuss’ books. Tables with brightly colored tablecloths and small bowls of swimming fish entertained the children as they ate their breakfast.
Story time started with Motley reading “The Cat in the Hat” as Thing 1 and 2 acted out the book. Seated on the floor, the children and parents listened intently, holding up “Sam I Am” signs on cue. Each child received a special ticket for door prizes. The readings finished up with Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham.”
And what would a special Dr. Seuss breakfast be without dessert — Dr. Seuss cake, cupcakes and a “ham” cake, crafted by Celestine Mundy, BJACH’s DFAC civilian cook supervisor.
Parents commented on the beautiful decorations and one Soldier said the “green eggs” reminded him of the food at basic training, but they were a lot better.
A young mother, who declined to be identified, said that this was a great way to start the day — a healthy, nutritious breakfast that she didn’t have to cook or clean up afterwards and the story time entertained the kids.
“I wish every Saturday was like this. There were no disagreements at the breakfast table and everyone ate. What more could a Mom ask for. I was even able to enjoy my breakfast this morning, which was a rare treat,” she said.
