(MECHANICSBURG, Pa.) -- Ten Sailors from Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Business Systems Center (BSC) took part in an Adopt A Highway cleanup in Mechanicsburg, April 5.
The cleanup project was performed as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) state-wide Adopt A Highway program and served as an opportunity for Sailors to act as environmental stewards of their community by removing trash and debris from a two-mile stretch of road outside of Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg.
“We want to do our part to help keep the environment and our community clean,” said Lt. Frank Silva, Adopt A Highway volunteer and project officer at NAVSUP BSC.
For more than 10 years, Sailors assigned to NAVSUP BSC have volunteered to hit the streets and beautify the area along Sporting Hill Road.
“A benefit to having a long term partnership with NAVSUP BSC is that we can rely on them year in and year out,” said George Reigel, roadside specialist for district 8-0, PennDOT. “We know that Sailors are reliable and are in for the long haul. They care about environmental issues.”
Reigel noted that this program also helps save money in manpower costs, which allows the department to direct more funds towards road repair.
PennDOT’s Adopt A Highway program includes state highway right-of-ways, including interchange areas, traffic islands or two-mile sections of roadway. Groups volunteer for a two-year period and are provided materials to help maintain their designated area. PennDOT also posts recognition signs along the adopted roadway as recognition for participant efforts.
NAVSUP BSC provides the Navy with information systems support through the design, development, and maintenance of information systems in the functional areas of logistics, supply chain management, transportation, finance, and accounting and is one of 11 commands under Commander, NAVSUP. Headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and employing a diverse, worldwide workforce of more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel, NAVSUP's mission is to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and joint warfighter.
