Pittsburgh (NNS) Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh held a change of command ceremony, where Cmdr. Peter Hoegel was relieved by Cmdr. Thomas McKeon as commanding officer of NTAG Pittsburg, May 9.
The event was held at the historic Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, and also served as a retirement ceremony for Hoegel, honoring his 22 years of naval service.
“As I reflect on my time in the Navy, I can’t help but be proud of everything that we’ve accomplished,” said Hoegel. “Although I am retiring, I am confident in what the future of the Navy holds. I’m confident because I know the talented individuals that make up recruiting and work tirelessly to bring in the next generations of Sailors.”
Capt. James Bahr, commodore of Navy Recruiting Region East, was in attendance and officiated the transfer of command as the presiding officer for the ceremony. Bahr applauded Hoegel during the ceremony, where he was recognized for his leadership and years of dedicated service.
“Peter, you have brought out the best in those you’ve led,” said Bahr. “Through a diverse career spanning over 20 years, you have served the Navy honorably, and inspired those around you to achieve more.”
Bahr also welcomed McKeon to his new role, and expressed his confidence in him as the new commanding officer of NTAG Pittsburgh.
“I know you are ready and I have full trust and confidence in your ability to lead this great team with your specific touch and perspective,” said Bahr. “Serve them well and you too are sure to have a very rewarding and enjoyable command tour.”
During the ceremony, Bahr presented Hoegel with the meritorious service medal for outstanding meritorious service as commanding officer and executive officer of NTAG Pittsburgh from June 2016 to May 2019.
“Thank you for your motivation and drive to get the job done,” said Bahr. “You all have stepped up to meet the most demanding challenges. I congratulate you for the work you do, day in and day out. It us because of you and others like you that we have the greatest Navy in the world.” McKeon thanked Hoegel for his mentorship over the years and leadership of NTAG Pittsburgh.“
Make no mistake, what we do right here in NTAG Pittsburgh matters,” said McKeon. “Remember, the fleet starts here. You are the foundation that provides the future of the Unites States Navy. Your actions here carry weight and magnitude.”
Established August 1, 2018, NTAG Pittsburgh is one of eight Navy Talent Acquisition Groups. Their recruiting efforts span throughout parts of western Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia and Maryland. Their goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
