FERNLEY, Nev. (May 14, 2019) -- The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve presented the Seven Seals Award to Jewell McCullar, a Fernley High School teacher, on May 14, in the school’s gym.

“Today we had an opportunity to present an ESGR award to a teacher that was dedicated to collecting items to support our Air National Guard Members during the deployment cycle,” Fred Barton, program manager for the Airmen and Family Readiness Center here said.

The award was presented by John Skowronek, volunteer with ESGR; Barton; Col. Eric Wade, 152nd Airlift Wing commander; Chief Master Sgt. Mark Prizina, 152nd command chief master sergeant and other members of the Nevada Air National Guard.

McCullar rallied his students, soccer team and football team to collect items for the Nevada Air National Guard members who were deployed during the past year. Combined, they sent out over 150 care packages that included locally made coffee, T-shirts, hats, video games, assorted snacks, reading material and hygiene items.

Some students sent personalized handwritten letters, post cards and thank you cards.

McCullar had members of the soccer and football teams sign a soccer ball and football for the deployed members.

Timothy R. Schweppe, first sergeant assigned to the 152nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, deployed and remembers bringing the football out during a barbeque while overseas.

“The football team from Fernley signed a football and sent it over with the care packages,” Schweppe said. “I brought it out to the BBQ, and the pilots, navigators, and everyone in (operations) was able to throw it around, and it felt a little more like home.”

Seven Seals Award was created by Department of Defense to recognize employers and individuals for their support to the Guard and Reserve.
