LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, Rear Adm. Brendan R. McLane, held an all hands call for local recruiting stations that primarily fall under Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Nashville’s area of responsibility, May 16.
During the all hands call, McLane touched on many important topics for the Navy recruiting enterprise, including the current goal of enlisting 39,000 new Sailors this fiscal year, stress management and new recruiting strategies, such as swarm operations.
“I want thank you for what you do every single day,” said McLane as he addressed the command. “With a difficult market and nationally low unemployment rate, it is more difficult to bring in academically and physically qualified Sailors into the Navy. However, you all are doing great things to meet the bigger picture of building a 355-ship Navy.”
McLane continued to address that statistically, unemployment is down to 3.9 percent, the lowest it’s been since 1969. Out of the 20 million 17-21 year olds in the nation, only 370,000 people in that demographic would consider joining the Navy and are academically and physically able to.
Recruiters attending the all hands call also had the opportunity to ask questions and engaged in McLane’s presentation as they discussed the future of the recruiting enterprise.
“This is the first time in five years that an admiral has come visit us in Arkansas,” said Cmdr. Tonrey Ford, commanding officer of NTAG Nashville. “The admiral talked about our mission and recognized the hard work the Sailors of NTAG Nashville are doing. He is making a concentrated effort to be out here and we all appreciate it.”
The all hands call also served as an award ceremony, where five Sailors were awarded the Navy achievement medal.
“It was a great honor to be awarded two Navy achievement medals by [Rear] Adm. McLane,” said Master-at-Arms 1st Class Michael Gehringer. When you put in hard work and dedication to a job you love, it is a great personal achievement, but it is beyond an honor to be recognized by the admiral himself.”
The recruiters and NTAG Nashville leadership expect to use the lessons learned from the event and apply those lessons to the recruiting mission to man the future 355-ship Navy.
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 18 Navy Recruiting Districts and eight Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,330 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
