Story by Chief Mass Communication Specialist Kathleen Gorby
It could be argued that drive, dedication and sacrifice are key ingredients in the forging of not only a successful career, but also an enduring legacy. Without a doubt, there is one Florida native who has these qualities in spades: Engineman 2nd Class Gabrielle Anthony.
“I’m a true Florida girl who decided to join the world’s greatest Navy with a future goal of one day commanding a fleet,” said Anthony.
Bold and direct. Two more important traits indicating leadership potential and a bright future.
Anthony, is now a recruiter at Navy Recruiting Station Temple Terrace, Florida. She previously served on the Harper’s Ferry-class amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) and has been in the United States Navy for six years. She was recruited into the Navy after graduating from Atlantic High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, where she grew up.
One of the reasons Anthony joined was to grow both personally and professionally. It’s clear she also wanted to have an impact on others.
“The Navy has given me the opportunity to become a worldwide influence,” she said. “I thought recruiting would be a great opportunity to introduce and educate individuals and communities about the world’s greatest Navy.”
Anthony has only been recruiting for about four months, but she has already taken on the additional responsibility of a Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocate. It’s certainly not easy to take on extra duties while trying to meet quotas as a recruiter, but she seems particularly well suited to this dynamic environment.
The best parts about recruiting are having new goals every month, and “being able to provide a positive life changing experience to the qualified,” she said.
While at her recruiting command, Anthony will be actively working towards advancement in rank, becoming recruiter of the year, and leading a recruiting station.
Being the strongly goal-oriented professional that she is, it should come as no surprise that Anthony has some pretty large civilian sector goals on top of her naval career aspirations. A couple of her personal goals include earning her bachelor’s degree, acquiring a real estate license, and investing in two properties this year alone.
Helping others and giving back to the community is just as important as building and developing one’s self though. Anthony recognizes this.
“I’m a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions at Wharton High School, which aids in guiding students to make responsible decisions,” she said. “I also teach tennis and golf lessons for youth in Daytona Beach, Florida.”
Anthony also believes it’s important to represent the Navy in communities where it’s not often seen.
Anthony intends to stay in the Navy and make a career out of it. There are several reasons for this, but she said one of the best aspects of being in the Navy is its diversity and the opportunity to work with different people from all over the world.
The Navy has also helped Anthony grow considerably and sharpen her innate talents.
“My strengths are training, delegation, accountability and decision-making capabilities,” she said. “They have grown drastically since everyday those characteristics are used in some shape or form by myself, my peers and my leadership.”
Anthony, 24, is the youngest of three siblings and which she says helped her to learn how to be competitive and set her personal goals to the highest level.
