MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) – A Sailor’s first duty station is often sea duty, being stationed aboard a ship, attached to a squadron, or even being stationed overseas on a ship. However, it is not unheard of for a
Sailor to be landlocked on board a shore-based command.
Yeoman 2nd Class Brianna Price arrived to Navy Recruiting Command (NRC), her first duty station, in June, 2017, as a seaman apprentice directly following the Navy’s Yeoman “A” school training program.
Upon checking in, Price quickly made a name for herself by getting involved with many command and base-wide functions and committees. She was eager to lead her peers so she ran for the role of president of the Junior Enlisted Association (JEA). Her ambition paid off and she earned the title and responsibility.
The now 21-year-old Navy leader enlisted two years ago out of her home town of Greenville, North Carolina. At such an early stage in her career, she has made an incredible impact on her command as well as her professional development.
“I joined the Navy because I wanted to do something different,” said Price. “I come from a military family. My dad was in the Air Force, and my mom was in the Army, so I decided that I want to join the Navy and work on a ship.”
However, far from any large body of water, Price has made the most of her time at NRC. Within her first year at the command, she advanced to the rank of petty officer third class, she was selected as the NRC Bluejacket of the Quarter for two separate quarters, and she earned Blue Jacket of the Year, which is an annual award given to acknowledge a junior Sailor that exceeded all expectations of the NRC mission.
“My chain of command is responsible for my selection,” said Price. “With their mentorship and training, I was able to overcome challenges and accepted new ones to become a well-rounded Sailor. If I stay motivated, other people around me will be motivated too.”
With superior performance, Price was able to advance quicker than most and picked up the rank of second class petty officer in just two years of joining the Navy.
“I have received nothing but positive feedback from the command since advancing,” said Price. “I truly feel like I grew up here. The Navy has expanded my comfort level when it comes to talking to people and has made me appreciate diversity. I truly believe that I am a better person because of it.”
As her time at NRC comes to a close, senior leadership of the command reflect on the many things Price accomplished at her first duty station.
“YN2 Price is an outstanding Sailor who has performed admirably at a staff command,” said Senior Chief Yeoman Robert Schardt, NRC senior enlisted leader. “She is already years ahead of her peers and her accomplishments speak volumes of her potential.”
Price is continuing her Navy career and will report to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 117 (VAW-117), based at Naval Air Station Point Mugu, California, later this month.
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 18 Navy Recruiting Districts and eight Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,330 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
