MEMPHIS, Tenn. – U.S. Navy recruiters participated in the U.S. Naval Academy versus University of Memphis game’s halftime ceremony held at the Liberty Bowl Sept. 26.

Nineteen Future Sailors walked onto the field with the Commanding Officer of Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Nashville, Cmdr. Patrick Tanner Acker, for their oath of enlistment.

The oath of enlistment is a promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the superior officers. The oath is a prerequisite to joining the military and shipping off to basic training.

The event was particularly special for Acker who graduated in 2001 from the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

“It is a sincere honor to administer the oath to the Future Sailors that are joining the Navy from the Memphis area,” said Acker.

The Future Sailors took the oath in front of a crowd filled with both local residents and military personnel. Following the oath, the crowd erupted in cheer showing their patriotism and support.

“I was nervous at first, but also extremely proud and honored to swear in at halftime during a Navy football game,” said Sean Geisert, a Future Sailor assigned to Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center (TAOC) Blues City.

Sean Geisert will attend aviation structural mechanic “A” school after graduating from Recruit Training Command (RTC).

“I thought about how I was able to represent my station and my fellow Future Sailors,” said Taylor Garrett, a Future Sailor assigned to TAOC Blues City. “I was proud to be out there in front of all of those people.”

After graduating from Recruit Training Command (RTC), Taylor Garrett will attend sonar technician (surface) “A” school.

“I think this will be an experience that these Future Sailors will not forget,” said Acker.

The game concluded with Memphis winning against the Naval Academy 35-23.

Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 17 Navy Recruiting Districts and nine Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,330 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
