VICENZA, Italy (Oct. 4, 2019) – Fire Prevention Week started Friday with a tour of the fire house by Vicenza for Children and the signing of a proclamation at the fire house on Caserma Ederle.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is: “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your Escape!

USAG Italy Fire Chief Jeff Hawkins says this is an important theme for Army families to focus on.

“We hope our Vicenza and Camp Darby communities learn to to have a plan to escape from the dangers of fire before it happens. This includes where you live, work, and play. Fire can happen anywhere at any time. It’s all about being prepared,” said Hawkins.

Reporting a fire in Italy is one other thing the fire department hopes the USAG Italy community becomes aware of.

“Our biggest concern is fire reporting by dialing 117 to report a fire on base. Personally, I have talked to folks and only about 20 percent know the number to report a fire is 117. Fire reporting in Italy is much different from the U.S. Here, USAG Italy dials 117 for fire and incident reporting; NOT 911 like in the states,” Hawkins said. “Not knowing what number to will definitely slow the process when help is needed.”

Hawkins said it is important to know your home address because 117 operators do not have an enhanced system like 911 systems in the United States. They don’t know where the caller is reporting from without an address.
