Soldiers from the 82nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, fielded the AN/PSS-14 Mine Detector Oct. 21 - 25.
The AN/PSS-14 provides dismounted Soldiers a significantly increased mine detection capability. According to the PM website — https://www.pica.army.mil/pmccs/PmCountermine/Countermine/ An_Pss.html.
The system employs a state-of-the-art metal detector and ground penetrating radar to achieve a high probability of detection. The AN/PSS-14 reliably and consistently detects both antitank and antipersonnel mines.
“The PSS-14’s dual capability of ground penetrating radar and metal detector, allows Soldiers to move quickly and safely across the battlefield which increases survivability,” said 1st Lt. Levi Haguewood, Officer in Charge of the AN/PSS-14 new equipment fielding.
Soldiers received classroom instruction on the capabilities and how to effectively employ the new equipment. Later in the week, Soldiers built their confidence and proficiency with hands-on training at the mine detection lane.
“The new fielding expanded my knowledge and it is definitely a lot easier to use than the previous models,” said Sgt. Quinton Tucker, Bravo Company, 82nd BEB, 2nd ABCT, 1st Inf. Div. “We will be able to effectively utilize the equipment across the formation.”
Enemy threats and techniques continually evolve and the AN/PSS-14 keeps Soldiers ahead of our advisories.
“It allows us to detect threats we couldn’t before,” said Tucker. “In addition to the new technologies, there’s new techniques we use to counter threats.”
The battalion will continue fielding the new equipment and training over the next few months. The AN/PSS-14 increases the “Dagger” Brigade’s engineer capabilities and survivability.
