CHICAGO, Ill. (Nov. 7, 2019) – Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets from Rickover Naval Academy commissioned their new school building during a ceremony on Nov. 7.
Commander, Naval Service Training Command, Rear Adm. Jaime Sands, who oversees the NJROTC program, attended the ceremony and welcomed a group of dignitaries that included former Chief of Naval Operations, retired Adm. John M. Richardson and former commander, U.S. Strategic Command, retired Adm. Cecil D. Haney. Also in attendance were local military leaders, City of Chicago leaders, students and staff.
Haney and Richardson both spoke during the ceremony and praised the namesake of the school, retired Adm. Hyman G. Rickover, who was the former director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program or “Father of the Nuclear Navy”. Rickover was a 1917 graduate of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and 1920 graduate of the United States Naval Academy.
“We continue his legacy with the commissioning of this new building,” said Haney. “I thank the students at such a young age for their dedication and to be a part of such a great experience.”
“It takes a team to make a dream like this come true,” said Richardson. “You (cadets) know how to make a dream come true like Adm. Rickover knew how to make his dream of a nuclear Navy come true.”
Rickover Naval Academy is a CPS high school where all the students are NJROTC cadets. It is one of six military academies in Chicago. The school opened its doors in 2005, sharing a building with Senn High School on the north side of Chicago. Having outgrown their space they now have a building of their own.
NJROTC is a citizenship development program, established in 1964, that instills service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment in students in secondary educational institutions. Today, there are more than 600 units at high schools and military academies across the United States including units in Japan and Guam.
Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), headquartered at Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill., oversees the NJROTC program and 98 percent of all initial accessions training for the Navy, except the officers produced by the U. S. Naval Academy. This includes the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program with more than 60 units at colleges and universities across the country, Officer Training Command (OTC) in Newport, R.I., and Recruit Training Command (RTC) at Great Lakes, Ill.
