FORT STEWART, Georgia- Members of the Marne Advocacy Resource Center honored retired Master Sgt. Natalie Lewis with a dedication of the MARC garden at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Dec. 6, 2019.
Lewis, who served as the 3rd Infantry Division’s sexual assault response coordinator from November 2012 to June 2019, cut the ribbon for the opening of the MARC on June 18, 2019.
“Her dedication, commitment and tenacity towards the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Program and Equal Opportunity programs led to the program and resources that are readily available today”, said Thomas Miskevish, 188th Infantry Brigade’s sexual harassment/assault response program victim advocate.
“It is not often that you meet someone who inspires you and who is so devoted, passionate, caring, generous and compassionate,” said Angela Pate, 3rd Infantry Division SHARP program manager. “Lewis constantly lived the Army values; her loyalty, selfless duty, courage and integrity shone through as she stood up for what was right.”
Lewis spearheaded the initiative to build the MARC. She visited Joint Base Lewis-McCord, Washington centralized service center and advocacy for victims and took that information back to Fort Stewart and applied it to the MARC.
“She spearheaded the two hardest programs to manage EO and SHARP without a program manager. She was it. She made it happen. She was a true non-commissioned officer, try and true,” said Roger Taylor, brigade victim advocate.
The MARC opened June 18, 2014. The facility serves as an avenue to give support to victims of sexual assault, sexual, harassment, discrimination and abuse.
“The MARC is one of few resource centers with centralized services and advocacy for victims on a military installation,” said Pate.
Lewis stated that victims seeking help had to visit several different locations on Fort Stewart for their needs. But, then the MARC facility opened services that range from behavioral health, family and child advocacy, Criminal Investigation Command, and EO with all residing under one roof.
“I felt very strongly that victims should be able to come to one place and receive all the resources and assistance in one location,” said Lewis.
Many commands and units are present at the MARC, including each brigade on Fort Stewart: 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division Artillery Brigade, along with Marne Air, Task Force 1st Battalion 28th Infantry Regiment, Medical Command, SHARP, SARC, EO, VA.
Their resources at MARC are not limited to only service members, but also to their Family members as well as their children.
