SAN ANTONIO – (Dec. 6, 2019) In remembrance of those who fought and for those who lost their lives on December 7, 1941, the students and faculty of Dorie Miller Elementary School hosted their annual Pearl Harbor and Dorie Miller Remembrance Program at the school.
Members of the community to include veterans, rotarians, and Sailors assigned to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Antonio attended.
According to Stephanie Jones, an education systems analyst with Dorie Miller Elementary, the program was absolutely amazing.
“The American Heroes Club did an outstanding job during their presentations and the students demonstrated their respect throughout the program,” said Jones, a Navy veteran. “It was awesome to have Sailors visit the school, especially in uniform. It was very powerful.”
Near the conclusion of the program, attendees witnessed a balloon release to honor veterans, especially the school's namesake, Dorie Miller, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
After the program, the Sailors visited with kindergarten and first grade students and read to them.
“It was a pleasure to represent the Navy during the program,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Angelica Brown, of San Antonio, the community service coordinator assigned to NRD San Antonio. “I also think it’s important that the students be educated regarding the attack on Pearl Harbor and the importance of their namesake, Dorie Miller.”
NRD San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes more than 34 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
