Story by Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Keeler

55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 28th Infantry Division

SCRANTON ARMED FORCES RESERVE CENTER, Pa. – Command Sgt. Maj. Jon B. Worley, outgoing command sergeant major of the 55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, passed the colors and the responsibility as the senior enlisted advisor of the brigade to Command Sgt. Maj. Shawn Phillips during a change of responsibility ceremony on October 20, 2019.

“I know I leave this brigade in capable hands,” said Worley. “I have known CSM Phillips for years, and I have all the faith and confidence in him.”

During Worley’s service as the command sergeant major for the brigade, he helped the transition of the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team to the 55th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade; a task that shifted not only the mission of the brigade, but also the components and the units within the brigade as well. The change of the brigade, the first MEB in the Pennsylvania National Guard, required a lot of development and learning processes as the 55th MEB also performs the Homeland Response Force mission too.

During his speech, Worley took time to acknowledge the importance of his family during his time as the command sergeant major, including acknowledging the support of his wife Lori Worley.

“To my family,” he said. “I would like to thank you for your support that makes my service possible; and for accepting the lost time and missed life events.”

The change of responsibility for the brigade command sergeant major involves the brigade colors being presented to Worley from the noncommissioned officer in charge of the formation. Worley then passes the colors to the 55th MEB Commander, Col. John Pippy; the commander in turn passes them to the new command sergeant major of the 55th MEB, Command Sgt. Maj. Phillips; Phillips, now the active command sergeant major of the brigade, passes the colors to the NCOIC of the formation.

The conclusion of the ceremony may end Worley’s time as the command sergeant major with the brigade, but he sees great things in the future for the 55th MEB.

“Change is a good thing. Soldiers, continue to hunt the ‘good stuff,’ remain focused on the mission, take care of each other, and ‘Forever Vigilant,’” he said.
