Employees and family members from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District commemorated the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday by participating in the City of Tulsa's 41st annual parade and day of service in Tulsa's historic Greenwood District, Jan. 20.
Approximately 40 volunteers came out in the cold weather to participate in the events organized by the Tulsa District’s Black Employees Program Committee.
According to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Commemoration Society the intent of the MLK Day Parade is for participants of all ages to have fun, remember Dr. King’s legacy and understand how they can be a part of keeping his dream alive.
“The parade is important to keep Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy alive here, across the nation and around the world,” stated Tulsa District Commander, Col Scott Preston. “We want to live his values and in thinking about diversity and equality and I think we do a pretty good job of that."
The theme for the parade was, “20/20 Vision: The Dream Seen Clearly."
“Participation is very diverse and many folks came out today to help us celebrate the legacy of Dr. King,” stated Michael Ware, Tulsa District Black Employee Committee Member.
The Tulsa District’s Oologah Lake staff provided a ranger patrol boat and tow vehicle for the event.
Bobber the water safety dog was on hand to interact with young and old alike and pass out candy and water safety reminders to spectators.
