There are numerous accomplishments a Sailor can take pride in while assigned to Navy recruiting duty. He or she has the ability to help build a stronger, more capable fleet, and also to make a positive and measurable impact on individual applicants. One Navy Chief Petty Officer assigned to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Dallas is uniquely positioned to make a positive impact within the entire community he serves.
For Chief Navy Counselor Tony Murphy, a member of the Navy’s career recruiting force, accepting assignment as Director of Community Outreach for NRD Dallas was an opportunity to represent the Navy with his natural talents and abilities in a way that benefits both the Navy and the communities he serves.
“I like working with and helping people,” said Murphy. “In my job as a recruiter and recruiting supervisor, I was able to do that a lot. In my new position working as the community outreach director, I get to focus my day less on accessions, and more on enhancing the public’s overall awareness of the Navy.”
The community outreach mission is to build trust, and to connect with youth and influential leaders to highlight the wide-ranging opportunities the Navy offers. By building long-term relationships with key influencers, the program will produce a robust network to support Navy recruiting efforts.
A self-proclaimed extrovert, Murphy is an outgoing, and overtly expressive person. He seems to effortlessly engage a room and be at home in front of any crowd or situation he faces. Walking through the many Navy offices he visits within the district, he is often greeted with smiles, high fives and handshakes from fellow recruiters.
The positive energy he brings to the command, and his knack for building relationships with people and organizations was apparent to NRD Dallas leadership, and he was offered the role as community outreach director by Master Chief Navy Counselor Ryan Monahan, the district’s chief recruiter.
“Chief Murphy is an excellent representative of this command, of Navy recruiting, and of the Navy overall,” said Monahan “He’s enthusiastic, and cares deeply about the mission and the people here. He easily builds and maintains relationships that both positively serve our Sailors and the public.”
“Part of my job as the chief recruiter here is to place Sailors in roles that will best serve them and best positions the Navy for success,” added Monahan. “Recommending Chief Murphy as community outreach director was an easy decision.”
Charged with cultivating relationships with businesses, individuals, and other relevant organizations to better grow awareness of the Navy in a district far removed from traditional Fleet concentration areas, Murphy uses his natural talents, and a genuine concern for the betterment of people’s lives to accomplish his mission.
“I like to see the positive in any person or situation,” said Murphy. “I like to work with individuals and tap into their strengths and harness that power for good. We work with a lot of great Sailors here and part of my job is to connect those great Sailors with influential leaders and members of the community.”
“This is an extremely satisfying position, and it’s probably the best one I’ve had since becoming a member of the Navy recruiting family,” added Murphy.
Since assuming duties as community outreach director, Murphy has coordinated and participated in a variety of outreach events including organizing command volunteers for community parades, and connected Future Sailors with sports organizations through mass enlistment on-field ceremonies. Murphy also led engagement efforts when Assistant Secretary of the Navy Gregory Slavonic visited the district as part of an Executive Engagement Visit.
NRD Dallas encompasses 150,000 square miles that includes North Texas and Oklahoma.
Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 15 Navy Recruiting Districts and 11 Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 815 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
