SAVAR CANTONMENT, Bangladesh - Alumni from the Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, are among the heroes working to break the human transmission of COVID-19.
One of those heroes is Directorate General of Medical Services Lt. Col. Fakhrul Alam MD, currently serving in the Bangladesh Army Medical Corps, who participated in CFE-DM’s two-week Health Emergencies in Large Populations (H.E.L.P.) workshop in 2019.
The workshop is conducted in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross, World Health Organization and University of Hawaii’s Office of Public Health Studies where students participate in discussions and practical exercises with top medical and public health professionals, from the military and civilian sector, to understand the latest trends in preparedness and response to epidemics and health emergencies.
“Since the outbreak of COVID-19 we are working to protect our motherland,” said Alam. “We are busy working in aid of civil power with the civil administration in all aspects to combat COVID-19 in Bangladesh.
He has been a part of the ongoing effort of educating the public on the importance of staying home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, isolating and testing suspected people for the virus, and is currently in charge of one of their 14-day quarantine zones for people returning from an affected area.
“I’m applying the knowledge I learned from H.E.L.P. where I learned how to work for humanity in an organized way during a crisis period,” said Alam. “How and what to give priority when working with a large population. I am really grateful for my H.E.L.P. family.”
