MILTON, Fla. – Commander, Navy Region Southeast (CNRSE) Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, and Naval Air Station Whiting Field recently congratulated the winners of the 2019 Fire and Emergency Services award competition.
Navy Region Southeast Military Fire Officer of the Year is Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (ABH) 1st Class Aviation Warfare/Surface Warfare (AW/SW) Brian Clark and Navy Region Southeast Military Firefighter of the Year is ABH 2nd Class (SW) Alex B. Torres, both stationed at NAS Whiting Field.
“This year’s recipients exceeded the requirements and have set the bar for excellence and the highest standard of first-responder performance. These superstars epitomize our core values and demonstrate a sincere commitment in protecting those who defend America. Congratulations,” Mayes said in an email announcement in April.
Clark, NRSE Military Fire Officer of the year hails from Hoover, Ala. and has been stationed at NAS Whiting Field for several years.
“Being selected for fire officer of the year has been a significant achievement. Fire officer has been one of the toughest qualifications I have gotten, and it took me out of my comfort level. It has been a team effort with a lot of moving parts. Without having Sailors to lead, I would not be able to promote the concept of team work and all the initiative that goes behind it,” Clark said.
As a fire officer, Clark provides advice, training and mentorship to the firefighting teams that operate at NAS Whiting Field’s twelve outlying landing fields in Alabama and Florida. He helps the fire and crash teams understand how to develop incident action plans in the event of emergencies at the fields, and helps get Sailors ready to respond.
“There is so much that goes on beyond the scope of what is accomplished at Fire and Emergency. Without our firefighters that make up such a cohesive and dynamic team, day in and day out at the OLFs, I am absolutely nothing without them!” Clark said.
Torres, NRSE Military Firefighter of the Year hails from Las Vegas, Nev., and is Fire Captain at Navy Outlying Field (NOLF) Barin in Foley, Ala., one of the fields where Training Air Wing Five (TW5) student aviators train to become future aviators. As fire captain, Torres oversees crash, fire and emergency response actions, and the execution of life saving actions, if necessary, in support of TW5’s aviation training mission at the field.
“It’s an absolute honor to win Military Fire Fighter of the Year for Commander, Navy Region Southeast. I am proud to represent the Fire and Emergency Services Division at NAS Whiting Field. I have an extreme passion for firefighting, so much so that I also do it in my free time as a volunteer fire fighter for Escambia County Fire Rescue. This award means a lot to me and I hope to use it as a stepping stone to continue my career as a firefighter after my Navy career,” Torres said.
Clark and Torres are both critical assets to the NAS Whiting Field team and the aviation training mission. The award and recognition highlights their hard work and dedication in their careers and to the Navy.
