Fort Jackson is famed for being a location where Soldiers and civilians hone leadership skills; and one on-post teacher was recognized for demonstrating her exceptional skills.
Tawana Liz, a teacher at C.C. Pinckney Elementary School, was one of eight finalists nominated for the Department of Defense Education Activity’s 2020 Dr. Linda L. Curtis Educator of Promise Award. This is the second year of the award’s inception.
The award program was created to recognize educators who serves as a positive ambassador for military-connected schools, students, teachers, and families. The nominees should have less than three years teaching experience within DODEA. Annually, only one educator is identified as the recipient.
“To this day I still do not know who nominated me. I felt honored that someone thought that I deserved such an award,” Liz said. Liz was nominated by her colleagues and principal for the prestigious award.
Ryan Smith, principal of C.C. Pinckney said, “Ms. Liz’ first thought is always ‘what’s best for my students’.”
This is Liz’ second school year at Fort Jackson, where she’s a fourth-grade teacher and literacy leader for the school. She has a total of 12 years teaching experience and has taught in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Liz said there are many reasons she enjoys her job, but “the most rewarding is to witness students growth throughout the year and be an active participant in their growth.”
Liz added she loves learning and growing with students and colleagues.
“She’s constantly reflecting and improving her skills to be the best teacher she can be for her students,” Smith said. “Liz is a member of the Continuous School Improvement team and led professional development multiple times this year for both Fort Jackson schools with all of her colleagues stating that her training helped them to improve their job performance.”
“C.C. Pinckney is filled with great teachers that inspire one another and our students daily,” Liz said. “I am grateful to be a part of this learning community. I believe that great leaders inspire others to work hard and strive for excellence and that is what the administration at C.C. Pinckney has done for me.”
Although Liz did not win the award, she says the year has taught her to be confident in her work and she’s looking forward to another year at CC. Pinckney.
Smith and the school lauded her accomplishments.
“We are extremely proud of her (Liz) and she represented C.C. Pinckney very well,” Smith said.
