ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England- One year after breaking ground July 15, 2019, the 48th Fighter Wing remains on track for the inauguration of two F-35A Lightning II squadrons and personnel at RAF Lakenheath, England.
“Over the last year, we’ve commenced numerous projects in support of the first F-35 arrival in November 2021,” said Steve Rix, Defense Infrastructure Organisation programme director. “These projects included enabling works, infrastructure, aprons and training facilities to enable the U.S Air Force the ability to live, work, train and deploy here from the base.”
The DIO, alongside its U.S. Air Force colleagues, are planning future construction projects that will also include a school, a hospital, accommodations and hangars to support the expansion of the Liberty Wing’s capabilities, said Rix.
“Permanently operating U.S. fifth-generation aircraft in Europe will be a game changer,” said Col. Jason Camilletti, 48th Fighter Wing commander, “one that potential adversaries fear and our friends anxiously await.”
With the addition of two full squadrons of F-35s operating alongside existing F-15E Strike Eagles squadrons, the inventory of combat aircraft assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing will nearly double by the end of 2023.
“We look forward to continue building upon our already unmatched combat air force’s integration with our NATO partners and solidifying our claim as the U.S. Air Force’s premiere combat wing,” said Camilletti.
