SIERRA COUNTY, Calif. –The California National Guard Counterdrug Task Force (CDTF) provided both ground and aviation task force members to participate in a three-day interagency Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) mission led by Sierra County Sheriff’s Office, 28-30 September in Sierra County, California. CAMP was created in 1983 as a multi-agency law enforcement task force to combat illegal marijuana operations in California that have a devastating effect on the environment, wildlife, and our communities.
This partnership with the CDTF and Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is a new one, and provided experienced CDTF members to the interagency team for the execution of six search warrants and illegal marijuana eradication. The illegal grows proved difficult to access, and required significant amounts of time to disassemble the structures supporting each plant that stood, in most cases, well over 6 feet and often with circumferences of the same width.
Four CDTF members assisted Sierra County deputies and probation officers, along with California Fish and Wildlife, in executing search warrants by providing over-watch security and assisting in the removal 638 illegal marijuana plants.
“The CDTF members were impressively adept and professional” said Sierra County Sheriff, Mike Fisher. It was clear to see they were well-respected and appreciated by the partnering LEAs.
CDTF personnel offer a lot of valuable experience, resources, and manpower to CAMP operations like this one. Each CDTF member is trained in land navigation, Tactical Combat Casualty Care (T-CCC), and firearms training. This type of training knowledge provides military skill-sets that close resource gaps law enforcement agencies (LEAs) may have by providing training, case analysis, aerial and ground reconnaissance, and technical communications support to each phase of the operation.
CDTF has been in operation for 30 years, tackling missions like CAMP and operations that directly support our law enforcement partners. CDTF is committed to supporting federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies where a counter-narcotic nexus is the primary purpose in protecting the communities within California.
In 2019, CDTF supported 176 LEAs in more than 375 missions and denied drug trafficking organizations the ability to conduct illegal operations within our state. In all, CDTF supported $2.5 billion in seizures of illegal drugs, weapons, property, and currency.
