JOINT FORCE HEADQUARTERS, Ind. (January 14, 2020) — Service members from Joint Force Headquarters at Stout Field participated in an exercise alongside local agencies January 14, 2020.

Indiana National Guard joined forces with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana State Police, Wayne Township Fire/EMS to train on existing Standard Operating Procedures, or S.O.P.’s, to determine what works and what needs updated during mock explosions on base.

TJ Edwards, the Emergency Management Coordinator for the Indiana National Guard, describes the importance of working with local agencies.

“The purpose of the exercise is to make sure that our internal S.O.P.’s are where they need to be as well as how we work with our first responders,” said Edwards. “Do our S.O.P.’s coincide with theirs and how they respond so that we are working together as a cohesive team when an incident happens here at Stout Field.”

After the mock explosions were detonated, the base was put on lock down while the local agencies cleared, x-rayed, and secured all buildings on base. For those new to the agencies, like Jacob Carey, an EMT with the Indianapolis EMS, this exercise helped prepare for what to do during a real-world incident.

“I feel like, for me, because I am a newer EMT, this was definitely essential for my training because I never experienced anything like this,” said Carey. “If I do have to experience this, now I’ve had some training to know what to do.”

Exercises are essential training for both service members and local agencies to be better prepared for real-world situations.
