U.S. Africa Command conducted an aerial show of presence over Somalia using multiple aircraft in conjunction with air-to-ground integration training with the Somalia National Army – Danab, April 22.
“The U.S. brings with it an arsenal of specialized aircraft and aerial capabilities that enable our forces to respond to crises and combat terrorism,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Dagvin Anderson, Special Operations Command – Africa commander. “We use these capabilities as part of our promise to the Somali people to support them in their fight against al-Shabaab and other violent extremists.”
The U.S. employs various combat aircraft that are multi-role, multi-mission tactical assets that support a wide spectrum of operations. These assets work in coordination with ground teams to provide a range of defensive and offensive support.
“The aircraft supporting operations in East Africa are specially designed to give us a tactical edge when we conduct conventional and non-conventional operations, specifically when it comes to expeditionary and strike operations, troop insertion, and battlefield emergency management,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Nate Schuler, Special Operations Command – Africa air operations officer.
U.S. Africa Command operations in the region promote a peaceful and stable Somalia. Violent extremist organizations like al-Shabaab present long-term threats to U.S. and regional interests.
