Raleigh, NC – April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). Sailors and civilian staff assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Carolina take the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program seriously. They concluded the month of April with a walk to remember.

Recently, several NTAG Carolina service members and civilians walked a mile in solidarity to observe sexual assault awareness and prevention month. The theme of the walk was “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes”. It aimed to demonstrate a simple fact – sexual assault will not be tolerated.

Each participant of the walk wore a teal ribbon in recognition of sexual assault victims.

Machinist’s Mate (Nuclear) Petty Officer 1st Class David Allen, a Hattiesburg, Mississippi native and walk participant, said he used the time to truly try to empathize.

“I tried to imagine what it really must be like to be in the shoes of a sexual assault victim,” said Allen. “That’s what empathy is. That’s what empathy does.”

Allen went on to say why events like these are important from his perspective.

“There are a lot of people out there who think they can just get away with bad stuff,” said Allen, “and by spreading awareness our hope is that maybe it will help curve that thought.”

Operations Specialist Petty Officer 2nd Class Daniela Pulidoromo, a native of Oswego, Illinois who also participated in the walk, explained the significance of the teal ribbons.

“The ribbons are significant,” said Pulidoromo. “I would say the reason we wear them is to start a conversation because everything starts with a conversation. Someone might ask what it is and what it stands for. That opens the door for us to bring awareness to this very important topic. The ribbon I am wearing helps to represent SAPR awareness.”

Allen and Pulidoromo saw the walk as being beneficial – to others and to themselves.

“We walked to bring that same awareness to our community and show them that we are here for them too,” said Pulidoromo.

“This is a great way to shed light on the subject,” said Allen. “It was also nice to get out and get some steps in today.”
