SALT LAKE CITY- The 151st Air Refueling Wing celebrated the Month of the Military Child by providing free garden kits to Airmen on April 29 at Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base.
The event was hosted by Scott Jones, Airman, and Family Readiness Program manager, as a fun way for military families to show their appreciation to their children.
"The month of the military child is important because it helps us show appreciation, love, and understanding for the children of our military families," said Jones. "It helps make the children understand that they are a valuable part of their family and play an important role."
There were more than 60 kits distributed out to Airmen of the Utah Air National Guard. Each kit contained a small garden box, soil, and various herbs and spices to grow.
"This is an awesome opportunity to help our families not only experience gardening but be able to get outside and spend time as a family and connect," said Jones.
The Month of the Military Child was established in 1986 by the Department of Defense and is recognized today by DoD Military Community and Family Policy and the DoD Education Activity. In 1986, the DoD increased campaigns and initiatives for children of military service members and decided to spread awareness by celebrating families' sacrifices each year during April.
