FORT MCCLELLAN, Ala. - Barracks that have housed Soldiers since World War II are scheduled for demolition for a site improvement project. Many Alabama Guardsmen who have stayed at Ft. McClellan will be familiar with the white barracks that have housed countless Soldiers throughout the years.
The WWII era buildings have aged beyond their usefulness and the project will provide units training at Ft. McClellan with up-to-date facilities.
“This is bringing us to the modern times,” said Sgt. 1st Class Robert E. Ray Jr., the training center management analyst at Ft. McClellan. “We’ve been stuck in the 40’s with some of these buildings and we’re well overdue on getting our Soldiers better accommodations when they’re having to stay here for training.”
The improvements will cost approximately 31 million dollars and will include: enlisted barracks, battalion headquarters, admin buildings, more parking spaces, and recreational areas.
“We have an all-ranks club that’s getting wrapped up right now that’s been adjoined to a recreational center,” continued Ray. “We’ll have a basketball court, later down the line a volleyball court and much later down the line a gym.”
The project is scheduled for completion in the next two years; however, as of April 11, 2021 no date is finalized.
