GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba — Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Naval sea cadets visited the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) Oct. 11, during the ship's scheduled port call.
The sea cadets were given a tour of the ship's well deck, hangar bay, flight deck, bridge and combat information center. They even went through damage control and firefighting training with Repair Locker 3.
"Bringing them on the ship they get to see the different aspects and elements of the Navy," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Kacey Blackmon, a master at arms and sea cadet instructor. "They get to see the variety of jobs the Navy has to offer and they get to see more than what we can show them on base."
Since 1958 the Naval Sea Cadet Corps has been committed to providing American youth with a drug and alcohol free environment to foster their leadership abilities, broaden their horizons through hands-on training and guide them to becoming mature young adults.
According to Senior Chief Petty Officer Victor Gonzales, a boatswain's mate and commanding officer of the Guantanamo Bay Sea Cadet Division, the Guantanamo Bay Sea Cadets are the only American sea cadet division that is located outside of the United States.
Wasp is currently deployed on Southern Partnership Station-Amphib with DESTROYER SQUADRON FOUR ZERO and a Security Cooperation Marine Air Ground Task Force embarked. Southern Partnership Station is part of the Partnership of the Americas Maritime Strategy that focuses on building interoperability and cooperation in the region to meet common challenges.
