Fort McCoy’s Whitetail Ridge Ski Area, part of the Pine View Recreation Area, will now offer a better snowtubing experience for guests thanks to recent landscape upgrades to the top of the tubing hill at the ski area, said Recreational Specialist Alex Karis with Outdoor Recreation for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR).

During late summer and early fall, work was completed on the tubing hill that including adding more dirt and reshaping the hill, Karis said. He said it will lead to many good things for the area.

“First, this upgrade will help with opening the hill sooner,” Karis said. “By adding the amount of dirt that we did, we will be able to open our tubing hill sooner because in the past 3 seasons since the Magic Carpet lift was put in, we have had to fill that entire area with snow.”

Karis said the work took many weeks to complete.

“With the dirt foundation there now, we should be able to get the top area of tubing done in a more reasonable timeframe,” Karis said. “Additionally, we will be able to concentrate on the ski hill side of the operations at a faster rate and hope to have that area operational sooner as well. We have limited snowmakers and ability to make snow so the focus is always tubing first, but having this dirt in place now means we can shift operations at a more rapid pace.”

The landscape improvement will also allow for more tubing lanes.

“By having a more solid base with the dirt, we are able to angle the lanes better to accommodate more lanes,” Karis said. “When the area was all snow, it presented a safety risk of the snow giving way and melting at a faster rate than the areas that already had dirt under them. Our hope is that with the new dirt in place we will be able to add two to three lanes to the tubing hill to enhance the experience for our patrons.”

Whitetail Ridge Ski Area offers snowtubing, skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing options. The area also has a chalet that includes the Ten Point Pub, which has become a popular recreational space for ski area customers,” said DFMWR’s Business and Recreation Division Chief Scott Abell.

The Whitetail Ridge season is generally mid-December to mid-March, as long as weather conditions hold.

Pine View Recreation Area facilities are open to the general public. Discounts are generally offered to military members or Department of Defense civilian employees. A visitor’s pass, military ID, or Department of Defense ID is not required to access the recreation area.
